THE TOP FIVE...Anna Wintour facts
As she steps down from American Vogue after 37 years as editor-in-chief, here are some surprising things you might not know about La Wintour.
She banned chives, garlic, onions and parsley from the Met Gala.
Wintour began her involvement with the Met Gala in 1995 when she officially took over as chair of the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has banned chives, garlic, onions and fish from the annual jamboree because of the smell and parsley because it would get stuck in people's teeth. Her preferred meal to serve at events is chicken pot pie, because it's ‘a one-course meal that has everything.’
Her A-list friends often turn to her for advice.
The actor Bradley Cooper sent Wintour the script for A Star Is Born before Lady Gaga was even cast wanting to know what the editor thought. When Alexis Ohanian proposed to Serena Williams, he called Wintour, who is close friends with Serena, for advice on the engagement ring. Williams herself later said that ‘From the second I got engaged, I barely said yes before I was calling Anna.’ Williams also called Anna for advice when she felt like her tennis career was floundering.
She doesn’t like vegetables.
When Condé Nast, Vogue's parent company, moved their headquarters from Times Square to 1 World Trade Center, Anna began frequenting The Palm, a nearby restaurant. She ordered the same thing for lunch every day: a steak and a Caprese salad with no tomatoes because she doesn’t like vegetables (even though tomatoes are technically a fruit). The meal used to cost $73.33 (with no tip). For the same reason, Wintour refused to have a vegetable garden planted at her home.
