THE TOP FIVE...Met Gala looks - ranked
Ahead of tonight's Met Gala fashion jamboree, here - in reverse order - are my favourite red carpet moments.
5. Cardi B in Thom Browne (2019, Camp: Notes on Fashion)
The opulence! The colour! The unapologetic grandeur! All of this, plus the fact that the quilted crimson gown with 10-foot feathered train made Cardi B look like a living heart meant that, for me, she totally nailed that year’s theme (when many guests seemed to miss the point of camp altogether).
4. Blake Lively in Atelier Versace (2022, In America: An Anthology of Fashion)
Say what you like about Blake Lively (and much of TikTok does already) but when I think of iconic Met Gala looks, I always remember this one. In a highly dramatic mid-carpet reveal, Lively’s dress transformed from copper to verdigris green - a tribute to the oxidizing Statue of Liberty. The gown’s train featured an embroidered celestial map of Grand Central Station, making it one of the most conceptually rich and visually dazzling interpretations of American fashion ever seen on the Met steps, imho. Also if you haven’t watched the video of the reveal, please find it on YouTube: the fashionista gasps are incredible.
