EGYPT TRAVEL TIPS
In Summer, temperatures reach a stifling 45 degrees Celsius, so most people travel (as we did) in December and January. This is high season for Egyptian tourism so be prepared for crowds and fully booked flights.
A note on wardrobe: Although the winter days are pleasant and sunny (and warmer the further south you go), the mornings and evenings can be FREEZING. Remember you’re essentially in a desert - the temperatures before the sun comes up and after it sets are often equivalent to London in December. I packed woefully badly and regretted it.
My top tip for packing unlike I did is thin layers: Uniqlo wool or cashmere, scarves, a lightweight jacket, vest tops, leggings, hoodies, socks, trainers or boots. My linen trousers were a life-saver - so useful for walking around temples and easy to roll up in a suitcase. I also wore my Panama hat a lot - even if it’s cooler than you imagine, the sun is still strong and there’s a certain Poirot-esque delight to be had in wearing one. You really won’t need bikinis or swimsuits at this time of year unless you’re planning an extended stay in Sharm-El-Sheikh.
